MOUNTAIN ROUTES

A walk around Peña Mayor (I)

The mountain range of Peña Mayor it is an interesting mountain which rises with a strong identity in the geographical centre of the region. the range extends from North, to South, Campo de Lapiaces en Sierra Mayor on a geographic area with an aproximate latitude of 7,5 square kilometres between the hill called el collado Orosu and the southern foothill (S) the final part of the backbone which points towards the Condao, in Laviana.

The rough slopes, densely furrowed by deep valleys, emerge sharply above the calm landscape of a territory which is truly beautiful, spotted with rural and fertile fields. they are dominated by the silhouette of the most emblematic summits: Trigueru (1.293 m), techo de la sierra, Texu (1.254 m), los Ortigales (1.091 m) and the renombrado Fueyu (1.149 m), known as Peña Mayor.

The route begins in the valle de Tiraña, you go along the AS-251 road which goes upwards to the council limit towards La Faya los Lobos (659 m), the village situated in a watercourse between La Ferrerina and El Rasu.
from the same road (con panel indicativo), there is a path (P.R. AS - 54), which borders the peak called El Rasu, until it meets, at el Violar, a small field with some stables, with a a path made of concrete which comes from the Casilla (P.R AS - 139), towards the east, and with hardly losing altitude it gives you a view of the councils of Bimenes, or Laviana, passing by the campa L´Arquera, Tres Picos, Pico la Úa and Campa Felguera.

Peña Mayor from la Campa Gües Further ahead and just after passing La Felguera, we descend gently via the northern slope, of the range and we will soon locate the spring called Fuentefría, close to the open field la Vaúga (809 m) where the path which we are on will connect with the one which goes up to the village called La Gamonal. Above the group of good houses which form the Vaúga, the Peña Mayor wall stands out supporting a chute of limestone spurs.
The route continues forwards towards a cattle track along a steep path which goes round the recreational area Xerrugües, until it reaches the Campa Gües just behind the look out point called Xerrugües, an extensive meadow where you can find a bar and a refuge called José Mata Refugio de José Mata.
