The Laviana council has an extension of about 130,99 Km², to the north it limits with Bimenes and Nava, to the south with Aller, to the east with
Piloña y Sobrescobio and to the east with San Martín del Rey Aurelio and Mieres.
It has a census of 14.327 inhabitant (registered in October 2007). Its surface is composed mainly of forest (46,48%), grass (38,75%) and non productive land (10,36%). The rest is divided
non arable area of (3,37%), arable land (0,58%) and water (0,46%).
Its river the Nalon, which flows through the council from east to west, various rivers flow into it, amongst those that can be highlited are
la Xerra (o El Condao), The river la Caya (o de la Rebollada) and the river Tiraña converging on its right, and the river Soto, The Raigusu (or river Ribota)
and the river Villoria converging on its left. Some of the most important villages and towns are situated on its banks and their surroundings: Pola de Laviana, Barredos
y el Condao.
The highest point of the council is the Peña Mea peak, with an altitude of 1560 m. Other important peaks in the city council are La Triguera (1291 m),
La Xamoca (1288 m) and the peak called los tres concejos (1097 m).
